Food
Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam.
On the High Tolerance walk we stop on the Zeedijk. This is where to eat after.
A hundred years ago Chinese sailors and stokers came ashore here for the shipping companies, and stayed on when their contracts ended. They sold peanut cookies in the street. Today the Zeedijk has the largest Buddhist temple in traditional Chinese palace style in Europe, and some of the oldest Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands.
These are the ones we would send a friend to: two classics on the Zeedijk itself, three places for dim sum, and two further out for when you want to leave the centre.
On the Zeedijk
Two old names, side by side.
Nam Kee
Zeedijk 111-113
A Zeedijk classic since 1981, cooking traditional Cantonese dishes. One of the oldest Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands and a long-time favourite in Chinatown.
New King
Zeedijk 115-117
Traditional Mandarin cooking, served fast, a few doors from Nam Kee on the Zeedijk. Known for its Peking duck, and a well-established name among locals.
For dim sum
Go for lunch and order a few baskets to share.
Full Moon Garden
Leidsestraat 95
A hidden spot near Leidseplein with more than 80 kinds of handmade dim sum and fresh Cantonese cooking.
Oriental City
Oudezijds Voorburgwal 177-179
Authentic Cantonese cooking in the Red Light District, with a large dim sum menu and a long list of teas.
Sea Palace
Oosterdokskade 8
A floating Cantonese restaurant moored by Centraal Station since 1984, with a long dim sum menu and room for hundreds of guests. A landmark as much as a restaurant.
Beyond Chinatown
In Oost, where the neighbourhood eats.
Café Wu
Dapperstraat 1
A modern bistro inspired by Chinese food and culture. Chef Timo de Beurs cooks everything from classic Chinese dishes to plates that bring in European techniques and ingredients.
Fook Sing
Molukkenstraat 155
A Chinese neighbourhood favourite in Amsterdam Oost, cooking traditional dishes from fresh ingredients.
Opening hours and menus change, so look at a restaurant's own page before you go.
